Shopping for Groceries
There are a number of grocery shops on the island, and The Strand Shopping Center along Seven Mile Beach is home toFoster’s Food Fair IGA, the most convenient grocery shop if you’re a Lacovia guest.
Foster’s is your one-stop shopping source for groceries and features fresh produce, meat and seafood, as well as organic free-range chicken and eggs, and gluten free products. If you’re visiting at Christmas time, you can even get items like mince pies, chocolate log rolls, Christmas pudding and brandy butter. Foster’s has a complete pharmacy, deli, and bakery as well.
Situated along the Esterly Tibbetts Highway, Foster’s is part of the IGA group on the island. It’s about a 15 minute walk. Head left on West Bay Road until Canal Point Drive. Turn left. The plaza will be located on your right at Esterly Tibbetts Highway. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on holidays. The store is closed on Sundays, Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Kirk Market provides an extensive selection of fruits and vegetables including local produce as well as a great range of organic, natural, gluten-free and specialty dietary items. It also sells anti-biotic and hormone free meats. You can purchase delicious home-style meals from the gourmet deli including all kinds of hot dishes and custom made sandwiches Kirk Market has a full service pharmacy and an on-site nutritional expert.
Kirk Market is located a 10 minute drive or about a 30 minute walk from Lacovia Condos on Eastern Avenue, between George Town and Seven Mile Beach. The store is open Monday to Thursday from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, Friday and Saturday from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, and during holidays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The store is closed on Sunday.
Selecting a Special Bottle
Perhaps you’d like some wine with your meal or a mixed drink to start things off. With a superb selection of wine, beer and spirits,Big Daddy’s is your best choice. Big Daddy’s offers a full range of sodas, juices, mixers and snack items. It also boasts a big craft beer selection for beer lovers. Big Daddy’s has free delivery, complimentary wine tasting and weekly specials and discounts.
It’s easy to find Big Daddy’s on West Bay Road just a minute walk and across the road from Lacovia.
Fresh produce is available in all island grocers. The closest shops for Lacovia guests, however, would be The Strand and Kirk Market. The Strand features a wide selection of both local and imported fruits and veggies. Kirk Market strives to support local farmers and boasts the largest, best stocked produce selection on the island. Customers can enjoy fresh fruit which is hand cut and displayed each day.
If you like to shop in a more casual atmosphere, then check out the wonderful locally grown produce at the various farmers markets. Situated a short distance from Lacovia is the Camana Bay Farmers and Artisans Market which takes place every Wednesday starting at 12:00 noon. While you’re there you can enjoy local musical entertainment and artisan displays, and the kids will love playing in Imagination Playground.
A four minute drive from Lacovia is the Plantation Organic Gardensin West Bay. Here, every week, is the Sunday Green Market where you have the opportunity to get organic produce that has been freshly picked from the field.
Local Fish Markets
Fresh fish favorites include grouper, snapper and other delicious local catch, all which can be purchased locally. You can purchase fresh fish near Cayman Cabana in downtown Georgetown. It’s about a 12 minute drive from Lacovia along West Bay Road. Here the fishermen set up tables and display their daily catch. You can also get some nice fish at Harbour House Marina which about 20-25 minutes by car from Lacovia but worth the drive.
Most supermarkets sell fish such as salmon, cod, sole, and trout. So if fish is on your menu, there are plenty of outlets to help you out.
Whether you’re looking for a really delicious treat for a mid-afternoon wake up, as a cap off to a meal, or some special sauces or condiments to accent your entree, there are some local products that will surely satisfy.
Tea Time in Cayman supplies everything tea-related from several island locations including Bay Market in Camana Bay. Here you will find USDA Certified Organic and Free Trade Certified offerings, as well as caffeine-free options and an assortment of flavors which may seem uncommon such as the Guilty Pleasure – Chocolate Mint tea and locally-named teas such as Cayman Romance featuring jasmine. The array of teas offered are as diverse as your moods, so one tea may not be enough!
